May 2019 Update
As with many California growers, the unusual weather fluctuations in 2018 was a challenge which affected the olive crop. Yields were down 30-80%; some growers had no crop. Some producers reported that their oil tasted different this year which is what we experienced. Unfortunately, our oil's quality is not where we want it to be so we will not be bottling it. Check back with us in November of this year for information on our 2019 harvest. Thank you for understanding!
We're Fairly New at this...
Pete Swayne grew up in southern California but spent most of his summers and winter/spring vacations with his Uncle Gene and Aunt Jo on their citrus ranch in Lemon Cove (near Visalia), a rural central California town. He quickly learned to love the chores of the early morning hours on the farm, tending to the soil, fixing irrigation lines, tackling the pesky pests, staying up all night and lighting smudge pots on frosty nights, and of course, the long hours of harvest.
After a career of running two of his family’s food processing plants in southern California, Pete longed for those days on the ranch. After selling the family business, he set out to find suitable property in northern California. Finally, in 2003, after a few years of searching, Pete found a 47 acre former Crane melon field in SW Santa Rosa as the future Swayne Family Ranch. After convincing his wife, Sherry, and their 2 kids and Sherry’s mom to move, they all came to Santa Rosa in 2004. It took two years to build- a little longer than anticipated!
Oat hay was the first crop put in on 20 acres, then 5.2 acres of chardonnay grapes were planted in 2008 and 3 acres of olive trees were planted in 2010.
